If you are planning to take the CAE exam in November/December, be sure to read up on how to prepare for it early in the semester.
The exam has four papers:
Reading and Use of English (1 hour 30 minutes): Shows you can deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines. Tests your use of English with different types of exercise that show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary. (Wed 29 Nov)
Writing (1 hour 30 minutes): You create two different pieces of writing, such as essays, letters/emails, proposals, reports and reviews. (Wed 29 Nov)
Listening (approximately 40 minutes): Tests your ability to follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as interviews, radio broadcasts, presentations, talks and everyday conversations. (Wed 29 Nov)
Speaking (15 minutes per pair of candidates): Tests your ability to communicate effectively in face-to-face situations. You will take the Speaking test with one or two other candidates. (Fri 01 Dec)
Reading and Use of English carries 40% and the rest of the tests each carry 20% of the total mark. Candidates can access their results through the University of Cambridge results website after 4 to 6 weeks. You will receive a separate score for each of the five skills (reading, use of English, writing, listening and speaking). These scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam.
There are three Pass grades - A/Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level C2 (score between 200 and 210), B/CEFR level C1 (score between 193 and 199), C/CEFR level C1 (score between 180 and 192) - and two Fail grades - CEFR level B2 (160 and 179) and Not Reported (159 and below). There is no minimum pass mark for individual papers. The grade is based on the total score of all 5 papers. Certificates are awarded to candidates who score 160 and above and are despatched approximately 10 days after the results release window has ended.
Registration fee: 205 EUR; Registration deadline: Fri 15 Sep 2017. For more information go to www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams/advanced/exam-format/. Please contact Anne Baumeister (email@example.com) for the registration form.
