If you are planning to take a Cambridge Exam in June, be sure to read up on how to prepare for it early in the semester.
You are not required to take a preparation course before taking a Cambridge examination, but we recommend that you do. If you have any questions about the topic please contact Bettina Kröll (email@example.com, 0228 - 77 3643).
Cambridge English: First is made up of four papers:
- Reading and Use of English (1 hour 15 minutes): Shows that you can understand texts from publications such as books, newspapers and magazines. (Tue 12 Jun)
- Writing (1 hour 20 minutes): Shows that you can write different text types, such as an essay, report or a letter. (Tue 12 Jun)
- Listening (approximately 40 minutes): Shows that you can follow a range of spoken materials, such as news and everyday conversations. (Tue 12 Jun)
- Speaking (14 minutes per pair of candidates): Shows that you can communicate effectively in face-to-face situations. You will take the Speaking test with one or two other candidates. (Fri 15 Jun)
Reading and Use of English carries 40% and the rest of the tests each carry 20% of the total mark. Candidates can access their results through the University of Cambridge results website after 4 to 6 weeks. You will receive a separate score for each of the five skills (reading, use of English, writing, listening and speaking). These scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam.
There are three Pass grades - A/Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level C1 (score between 180 and 190), B/CEFR level B2 (score between 173 and 179), C/CEFR level B2 (score between 160 and 172) - and two Fail grades - CEFR level B1 (140 and 159) and Not Reported (139 and below). There is no minimum pass mark for individual papers. The grade is based on the total score of all 5 papers. Certificates are awarded to candidates who score 140 and above and are despatched approximately 10 days after the results release window has ended.
Registration fee: 192 EUR; Registration deadline: Fri 15 Mar 2018. For more information go to www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams/first/exam-format/. Please contact Anne Baumeister (firstname.lastname@example.org) for the registration form.
