English people along the River Rhine in historical times? Certainly during the period of Romanticism ("Rheinromantik") or on their "Grand Tour" to Italy; some of them stayed in Bonn, lived here and were buried on the "Alter Friedhof". This literary guided tour not only mentions Byron’s text on the Drachenfels or italian Luigi Pirandello's letter about a visit to this mountain but you also get to know about nationalistic Ernst Moritz Arndt and his monument at the Alter Zoll, the monument of Heinrich Heine, Bonn’s 18th century theatre-history (when a woman led the court theatre), other famous students (as Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who wrote the text of the German National Anthem, and Friedrich Nietzsche), the local reading society ("LESE"), writing women (as Johanna and Adele Schopenhauer) and the ‘literary salon’ of Sibylle Mertens-Schaaffhausen.
Meeting-point: marketplace in front of "Altes Rathaus" (Old Town Hall)
Duration: 2 hours
