Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is now everywhere, and many claims are made about what it can do. This class will revolve around the ‘intelligence’ part of A.I., asking the question: can computers really think like humans? Topics include human consciousness, sudden flashes of insight, algorithms, the big bang, and basic quantum physics. We will also look at some of the latest developments from the world of A.I.
The emphasis of the course is on speaking, group discussion and sharing thoughts. Vocabulary and grammar will be addressed when they are relevant for communication and understanding. To facilitate discussion, participants are encouraged to read the selected passages prior to each class.
Requirements: about Abitur exam level English or better.
