Do you want to think and talk about the big questions? This course provides a general introduction to the history of Western philosophy, from Plato in ancient Greece, down to Jürgen Habermas in Germany. It is also an English language conversation class. The lessons begin with an introduction to a philosopher and a key concept, such as Plato’s theory of 'ideas', Marcus Aurelius on living a 'virtuous life', or René Descartes’s 'cogito ergo sum.' Here selected passages from the primary texts are used to explain their central views. This first part is then followed by class questions and discussions. The course is suitable for those new to philosophy as well as those with some knowledge already.
