As a UNESCO Learning City and resilience hub of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 initiative of UNDRR, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Bonn is contributing to the thematic series on “Securities” at Bonns Adult Lerning Center with presentations on resilience and disaster risk reduction as a cross cutting issue.
Building resilient cities requires more than understanding the hazards they face - it demands a clear picture of who and what is most vulnerable, and why.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, in partnership with the City of Bonn and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), invites participants to a 90-minute webinar focused on the critical role of data and information in urban risk assessments and resilience planning. Accurate risk assessments depend not only on high-quality meteorological and climate data but also on socioeconomic vulnerability information. Global institutions such as the European Centre for Medium‑Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) provide high‑quality climate datasets, forecasting services, and global standards that form the scientific backbone of risk assessment. These resources help cities anticipate extreme weather events, understand long‑term climate trends, and begin identifying potential hazards. But hazard information alone cannot tell the full story. Cities must also consider the lived realities of their populations: where people live and work, which communities face systemic disadvantages, and what critical systems are most exposed.
This session will highlight how integrated approaches to data - combining ECMWF resources, WMO expertise, and practical examples from up to two pioneering cities - can enhance decision-making and resilience strategies. Through practical examples and methodological guidance, participants will learn how linking hazard information with vulnerability data can strengthen resilience planning, support evidence‑based decisions, and ultimately protect those who need it most.
